Notes for Balsamiq Mockups

  • I found a DataGrid under the "Text" tab. One seems to assign columns and data by way of typing CSVesque content into it.
    • a carat symbol (^) will make a column header have a tick on it implying: "sortable"
    • [] is an empty checkbox and [x] is a checked checkbox
    • \r creates a line break
    • put square brackets around cell content to make a word a link as suggested here
  • The "Buttons" tab contains "Button Bar/Tab Bar" which may be drug to the screen. In the grey properties box change the "Selection" value to "None" to deselect the first value. One may alternatively select any value desired here.
  • Double-click a group to enter it and edit it. At the upperleft there will be a house-shaped icon that may be used to exit editing the group.
  • The "Common" tab has "Rectangle / Canvas / Panel" for drawing boxes. The grey properties box allows one to change the border and fill colors.
  • The grey properties box allows one to bring a selected item to the top or bottom of a stack or perhaps just up or down a level too. This works not unlike the comparable feature in Adobe Illustrator.
  • Export a folder full of .bmml files to PDF with: File > Export All Mockups to PDF... (One may create links from one .bmml to another to allow for one to navigate amongst screens in the PDF. Make something link to another .bmml as a button using the "Link" link in the grey properties pane.)
  • If one keeps all of one's .bmml files in one folder and keeps a folder called "Assets" within that folder, then .bmml files that are in the folder will appear as items in the "Project Assets" tab.
    • It is possible to save a group off as an asset. When doing so it will be collected into Assets/symbols.bmml.
      • Collect things into a group by selecting them and pressing Ctrl-G.
      • Name the group (at the grey properties pane).
      • Then a button for "Convert to Symbol" will appear (at the grey properties pane).
