The cn is a common name and it identifies the particular party. In this case it is a James Smith given as jsmith. The ou items are organizational units so James sits in the promotions organizational unit which itself sits in the marketing organizational unit. Reading backwards from the end of the route one starts with the most general container wrapping James and drills/navigates inwards to more specific containers within a container or containers until reaching James. dc stands for domain component.
I think Distinguished Name could be a term for:
cn=jsmith,ou=promotions, ou=marketing,dc=noam,dc=reskit,dc=com
