table locking in a transaction

If starting a transaction with table x and then touching table y later, you are likely shipshape, but if starting a transaction with table x and then touching table x again before ending the transaction you may encounter a lock. I had this happen to me yesterday. I experienced an inexplicable timeout which was, in fact, a lock.
