Perhaps one can mock classes and not just interfaces.

That kind of means that some of what I suggest here is bogus. I've done some Googling, in fear of bad blogging, that suggests one can mock classes. I'm used to seeing interfaces mocked as I'm used to seeing interfaces carrying the external dependencies which bled into other bit of code in the name of loose coupling.
