pessimistic verses optimistic concurrency

Per Wikipedia:

  • In optimistic concurrency one may craft and submit a transaction, and then if the transaction is inappropriate, it will be forbidden.
  • In pessimistic concurrency one may simply not edit an item if it is locked by the editing of another, thereby negating the need for last minute sanity checking as to whether or not an update should be allowed.
