It allows you to make a vertical selection across numerous lines of code as you may with Alt-Click-Drag in this trick in Visual Studio or moreover with Ctrl-Alt-Click-Drag in SSMS as suggested here. When you type it will replace the highlighted area on all lines with the new stuff.
