Show the "My Computer" icon on the desktop in Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter.

  1. click the "Server Manager" tile at the Windows menu
  2. click "Dashboard" at upper left of the "Server Manager" window you'll see
  3. then click on "Add roles and features" in the central content
  4. you will next start walking through the "Add Roles and Features Wizard"
  5. just stick with the defaults until you get to "Features" ...for example: it is good to just leave the radio buttons for "Role-based or feature-based installation" and "Select a server from the server pool" checked
  6. at "Features" this suggests that the checkbox for "Desktop Experience" which is nested beneath "User Interfaces and Infrastructure" should be checked
  7. afterwards you will need to restart Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter
  8. after the restart, you should be able to click in the desktop and pick "Personalize"
  9. at the "Personalization" window click "Change desktop icons"
  10. check the checkbox for "Computer"
  11. the icon will appear, though it will be labeled "This PC" instead of "My Computer"
